A SANCTUARY DEDICATED TO SAINTE ROSELINE

Daughter of the Lord of Les Arcs, Roseline de Villeneuve was born in the 13th century and entered the Carthusian Order at the age of 25. She later became prioress and devoted her life to prayer, charity and helping the poorest. She died in 1329, at the age of 66.

Recognised as a saint, Roseline is associated with many miracles. Even today, her presence gives the chapel a rare spiritual dimension. Her body rests in a crystal reliquary, visible inside the chapel. A 19th-century reliquary, placed in a niche within the chapel, also preserves her eyes, which, according to tradition, were miraculously preserved.

BETWEEN ANCIENT ART AND MODERN ART

Sainte Roseline communal Chapel houses several remarkable works, making it an essential stop for lovers of history, religious art and Provençal heritage.

Inside, visitors can admire a Nativity attributed to the School of Nice, a predella by the Bréa brothers, as well as a Baroque high altar surrounded by a sculpted altarpiece.

From 1968 onwards, thanks to the patronage of Marguerite Maeght, Sainte Roseline Chapel was enriched with modern works created by some of the great artists of the 20th century.

The sanctuary notably features stained-glass windows by Raoul Ubac and Jean Bazaine, a bronze bas-relief and a lectern by Diego Giacometti, as well as a large wall mosaic created in 1975 by Marc Chagall.

Entitled “The Meal of the Angels”, this mosaic depicts one of the miracles attributed to Sainte Roseline. It is one of the chapel’s major works and helps make this site a must-visit destination in the Var.
